Worldwide GHG emissions

Exec Sum world anthropogenic GHG emissions
  • 60Gt in 2019 (1 Gt = 10^9 tonnes)
  • main GHG : CO2, CH4, N20, F-gases
  • 64% CO2 from fossil fuel and industry (FFI), 11% CO2 from land use & forestry (LU), 18% CH4
  • FFI is fastest absolute growth (+67% vs 1990), F-gases fastest relative growth

What does CO2e mean?
Other gases, especially methane and nitrous oxide also warm the planet: we convert their warming potential into COâ‚‚ equivalent to simplify the measurement.

Emissions by sector (assuming 60Gt all GHG in 2019) :
  • Energy 20Gt : 30% all GHG
  • Industry 10Gt : 15% all GHG
  • Transport 8 Gt : 13% all GHG
  • Food, agriculture & forestry (LULUCF) 3 Gt : 5 % all GHG
  • Buildings 2 Gt : 3% all GHG
  • Non-CO2 from all sectors : 20 GT : 33% all GHG
